David H. Fine, Ph.D. Cocoas GeNO LLC is a privately held pharmaceutical company that is developing innovative nitric oxide (NO) generation and delivery platforms to enable the true potential of inhaled nitric oxide to be realized for the treatment of a multitude of diseases. Education: Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Leeds University, Leeds, UK; B.S. (Hons) in Chemistry, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa A-ha moment: Ive had many. That is what we do when we choose to pursue science and technology for our career paths. It is what makes our work so rewarding, discovering things that we didnt expect or figuring out a new approach to an old problem. Discovery has been the root of my academic career to my years in business. Many of the new discoveries came about by figuring out why important experiments failed. Philosophy: Follow your innate curiosity wherever it may lead. There is no such thing as a conventional approach. Always think outside the box. Ask why, and often the answer comes from contrarian thinking, and what may be backwards to many. Have confidence in ones own ideas, wherever they may lead. Chief Executive Officer GeNO LLC www.genollc.com Ruggero Maria Santilli Tampa-based MagneGas Corporation is the producer of MagneGas, a natural gas alternative and metal cutting fuel made from liquid waste. The companys patented Plasma Arc Flow process gasifies liquid waste, creating a clean burning fuel that is interchangeable with natural gas and has lower greenhouse gas emissions. Education: Doctorate in Physics, University of Naples, Italy; Italian equivalent Ph.D. in Physics, University of Turin, Italy; Visiting scholar at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Inspiration: The need to improve the environment, as well as the necessity for America to achieve fuel independence. Biggest challenge: Overcoming organized interests stagnated by pre-existing theories or technologies. Accidental discovery: Isoblueshift was theoretically predicted in 1991 and then experimentally verified by accident due to an increase in the temperature of measuring equipment. Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientist MagneGas www.magnegas.com A-ha moment: My a-ha moment came when I was able to discover new numbers based on an arbitrary unit and then the discovery of the generalization of differential calculus which allowed me to make major advances in the field. florida.HIGH.TECH 2013 fht_faces_2013.indd 55 55 2/11/13 2:26 PM
