INDUSTRY NEWS Chicago forester receives national award Ms. Sandy Clark, forester for the Village of Mount Prospect, Ill., was presented the Advancing Arboriculture Award from the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). Each year, the TCIA board of directors and staff members select a governmental agency, institution or green industry partner that has worked to advance legislation, regulation or practices that support, promote, develop and advance the tree care industry's mission. Clark has worked tirelessly on behalf of trees and their professional care. Her determination, honesty and exemplary work effort have gotten her through more than three decades of service to the Village of Mount Prospect. Not only has she developed a progressive municipal forestry and landscape maintenance program in Mount Prospect, but her program is highly regarded throughout Illinois. She initiated the first innovative tree risk management program to increase public safety while still preserving as many older trees as possible. She directed an intensive tree disease/insect control effort, drastically reducing the annual elm loss rate. "Sandy's focus on professionalism and high-quality care is admirable," said Mark Garvin, president and CEO of TCIA. "And her dedication to urban forest health is outstanding." As forester, she manages nearly 25,000 street trees and 42 acres of public grounds. She is a direct supervisor to a staff of 13 and, in spite of budget limitations, she ensures that they continually attend both formal and in-house training programs in all aspects of arboriculture, landscaping and safety. All of her forestry staff are certified arborists. A longtime member of the ISA, a certified arborist since 1990 and municipal specialist since 2008, Clark is a past board member of the Illinois Arborist Association (IAA) and a current member of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Municipal Team that contributes to a regional solution to Illinois' EAB problem. She has received a Gold Leaf Award from the International Society of Arboriculture, Honorary Life Membership with the Illinois Arborist Association, and an Exceptional Performance in Journalism Award from the American Public Works Association. Under Clark's tenure, Mount Prospect has been the recipient of the National Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA Award annually since 1985, and the Growth Award eight times since 1992. Mount Prospect received the Lady Bird Johnson Award for the beautification of its railroad right-of-way and has been accredited by the Society of Municipal Arborists since 1995. Clark has been a forester, mentor, leader, creator, researcher and defender of trees for more than 30 years. 8 Arbor Age / July/August 2013 Morbark Demo Days focus on markets, opportunities Morbark, Inc., opened its sixth Demo Days event with current and potential customers and members of Morbark's authorized industrial dealer network in attendance for factory tours, networking opportunities, vendor booths and informational seminars. The event concluded with demonstrations of equipment for the forestry and recycling markets. The first day's seminars featured Bill Turley, editor of C&D World; Danny Dructor, president of the American Loggers Council; and Delton Alderman of the USDA Forest Service, speaking on the current trends and opportunities in the construction and demolition, forestry and biomass, and housing markets, respectively. More than 150 people from six countries attended the 2013 Spring Demo Days, the first of two such events for Morbark this year. The highlight of the event was the equipment demonstrations, which showcased innovative machines for biomass production, including the new configuration of the 40/36 whole tree drum chipper to produce superior microchips for use by pellet mills and as supplemental fuel for cogeneration at coal facilities. Another new product demonstrated was the 3200 Wood Hog horizontal grinder, created to fill the gap between Morbark's 2600 and 3800 Wood Hogs for the recycling market and mulch producers. Completing the demonstration lineup were the Beever M20R Forestry chipper, the 30/36 NCL and 50/48 WCL track whole tree drum chipper, the 23 WCL Chiparvestor, the 4600XL and 6600 Wood Hog horizontal grinders, and the 1600 tub grinder. Morbark has scheduled a second Demo Days event on October 10-11 of this year. Husqvarna Group releases 2013 Global Green Space Report This year's Global Green Space Report explores people's relationships with forests, parks and gardens around the world. The findings reveal cause for both concern and optimism, and give inspiration for the future. The results converge in a simple statement: Green Spaces are good for us; we would benefit from visiting them more often than we do — and so would our children. However, the time we spend in Green Spaces is actually declining, and so is our knowledge about them. What does that mean, and how can the decline be reversed? Since 2010, the Husqvarna Group has been producing the annual Global Garden Report — exploring important trends, insights and topics related to gardens. In 2012, Husqvarna added parks and other Green Spaces within the urban environment, and in 2013, Husqvarna has expanded the scope further to include forests. Therefore, the report has been renamed the Global Green Space Report. The report consists of a global survey, as well as interviews with several experts and innovators. The survey was conducted throughout November 2012 in nine countries: Australia, Canada, www.arborage.com
