SOIL REMI COHEN & CELLAR of GRBaV, many nurseries inspected only material based on symptoms, allowing the CDFA certified block inspection program to take care of the majority of testing. That has changed in recent years, with the discovery of the transmissibility of certain strains of leafroll by mealybugs, and the recent discovery of GRBaV. Novavine, for example, tests its material every three years, the larger Sunridge every five. Dan Martinez of Martinez Orchards in Winters, who has been involved with the NCPN, reminded seminar attendees that it is not only important how frequently the blocks are tested, but also what percent of material within a block should be tested. He also brought up concerns about inconsistency in lab results, which can include false negatives and positives, in addition to the fact that it is unfeasible to test every vine. In addition to planting Protocol 2010 material, locating and elimi- Dan Martinez of Martinez Orchards raised concerns about inconsistent lab results when testing plant material. nating vines with leafroll, red blotch and or other viruses in existing blocks is a difficult and expensive step for nurseries. Fortunately, very few vines have tested positive for red blotch in the increase blocks of "We have a complete Crush Pad Package from Carlsen & Associates. We find it effective, efficient and safe. Even if red blotch, leafroll and other infected vines are removed, there still remains the challenge of keeping the remaining material clean, especially as the industry continues to discover the impact of vectors on the spread of virus. This challenge is shared by growers who have planted clean material that might get infected by vectors. We know that certain strains of leafroll, including GLRaV-3, are spread by mealybugs, that grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV) is spread by the dagger nematode, and that red blotch is a genetic relative to other viruses spread by leafhoppers and aphids. This presents a tremendous challenge to the industry at large, and Martinez poignantly stressed the need for continued research and financial support for research efforts.
