Alabama Architectural Foundation The Alabama Architectural Foundation exists to enhance the public 's appreciation and understanding of good architecture and the built environment and by extension of architects. This has been accomplished through publishing two books on architecture; Community in Alabama: Architecture for Living Together and Alabama Architecture: Looking at Building and Place, sponsoring of Speaker's program, helping underwrite Public Television Programs on architecture, helping underwrite exhibits on architects and their work and presenting programs and seminars aimed at engaging and educating the public. The Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non profit corporation. It is dependent on contributions from architects, corporations and individuals who have an interest in architecture. AAF has a volunteer board of directors both architects and non architects who share a love for the State and its built environment. AAF Awards The Foundation annually considers, and awards when appropriate, the Alabama Distinguished Architect Award. The Board of Directors also recognizes significant architecture in the state, not as a design award, but for the building's impact on and contribution to its community. The Distinguished Architect honor was established by the Alabama Architectural Foundation to recognize the lifetime achievement of individual architects, whether living or deceased, who have practiced architecture in the State of Alabama or have other unique connections to the State and who, through their personal dedication or excellence, have brought distinction and honor to the profession of architecture. The Alabama Distinguished Architect Award is the highest honor the Foundation can confer on an architect.
