GOOD TO KNOW Mammograms Don't Resist the Squish Do a search for "funny mammogram stories" and what comes back is actually a catalog of horror, from power outages to a tech running out of the room during a fire alarm…mid-squish. But this isn't the norm—and we all know it. So why do so many women avoid mammograms? Contradictory recommendations from the United States Preventative Services Task Force (age 50, then every other year), and groups like the American Cancer Society (age 40, then every year), are part of the reason, says Jolene Kent, medical imaging manager for Dean Clinic. "With conflicting information, some patients end up confused and don't schedule their exam," she notes. "And let's face it, this is not one of the most enjoyable exams. Although our equipment and processes continue to improve, some women are just not willing to have this test, due to discomfort." Kent says it's important to remember that being open with your technologist can make the experience more bearable. "Your technologist should work with you on the amount of compression you can tolerate," she says. "They should listen when you say 'enough.'" So, when and how often? Even though health care reform requires new insurance plans to cover mammograms at age 40, Kent suggests you talk to your doctor to decide what's best for you and your body. "There is a huge benefit to finding breast cancer early, and mammography is the gold standard for doing so," she says. —Emily Leas JAY C . HAZEN SARAH J. KARLS 413 W.
