ICUEE report | continued "Tier 4 is not only driving complexity into the units, it's driving costs, and that has had a positive impact on the pre-owned market," Smith says. The profile of the used drill buyer is changing, Martin says. "There's an on-going transfer of generations within companies, and the incoming generation is little bit different, taking more advantage of new technology and training." Overseas, he sees customers who are young, more entrepreneurial, and willing to take a risk. MTI, bought by The Charles Machine Works last year, started in 1986. HDD Broker has been in business for 13 years; Vermeer bought them in 2011. Extras for drillers HDD Broker recently rolled out a mobile listings app that enables customers to use their phone to fill out all the information and submit it directly to HDD Broker. The company's new InfoCheck program encourages sellers to provide comprehensive information on the machines they're selling. Each listing is evaluated on eight points, such as machine details and photos, inspection reports, work history, videos, etc. Customers can sort the listings by its InfoCheck rating. "It helps both the sellers and the buyers," Martin says. HDD Broker also offers an extended warranty qualifying 5-year-old and younger equipment with less than 5,000 hours. MTI has a users forum on its website, www.hddforums.com. "It's an information sharing site," Smith says, "a place for people to talk about what and what is not working. One of the biggest challenges of the industry is sharing information to help each other grow and learn." EW ICUEE 2013 round up Our editors were on the ground at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition this October. Some highlights from the show (complete stories on equipmentworld.com): Ditch Witch JT60 The Ditch Witch JT60 horizontal directional drill addresses the gap between its JT40 and JT100 HDDs, offering 60,000 pounds of thrust and pullback. The company says it has heard from customers who wanted a little more power than the JT40's 40,000 pounds of thrust and pull, but didn't need a machine as large as the JT100. Even though it has the benefit of a smaller footprint than its big brother, the JT60 still boasts 9,000 foot-pounds of torque – only 1,000 less than the JT100. The all-terrain machine is powered by a 200-horsepower, Tier 4 Interim Cummins diesel engine and Ditch Witch's two-pipe drilling system. Other features include the heavy-duty, planetary-driven anchor system and an exclusive, dual-pivot drill frame allowing the entry angles you need without compromising stability while drilling. 20 November 2013 | EquipmentWorld.com Genie GTH-5519 telehandler There are few cues from the outside of Genie's GTH5519 that it's received a major upgrade, says Chad Hislop. "The only real visible change is the engine hood," says Terex's Aerial Work Platforms product manager. As the Tier 4 aftermarket package grew, the under-the-hood enclosure needed to be reconfigured. This made Genie rethink the hood raise feature, which can now go back 90 degrees to for additional engine compartment access, as has a gas spring instead of pin release. Underneath, the Deutz TD 2.9 four-liter Tier 4 Final engine provides 74 horsepower, up from 67 horsepower continued
