Wineries + Breweries Unlimited Conference and Trade Show 2014 When: March 11-14, 2014 Where: The Greater Richmond Convention Center, Richmond, Va. To Register: Visit www.wineriesunlimited.com This show attracts producers and suppliers from multiple states and provinces in the Eastern U.S. and Canada. As in years past, Wednesday and Thursday will feature the trade show, in addition to educational sessions that will cover topics including enology, viticulture, marketing, management and finance. The Wednesday lineup will also offer a "Meet the Bloggers" panel discussion. Tuesday, March 11 Newcomers This session, led by Pearmund Cellars owner/winemaker Chris Pearmund, with opening remarks from Jay Youman MW, educational director and owner of the Capital Wine School in Washington, D.C., will examine world, U.S. and East Coast trends in consumption, tourism and education. A Growing Concern: Excel-Based Trellis Design on Costs, Yields and Returns, Soil and Petiole Sample Understanding Speakers, including vineyard consultants Chris Hill and George Wilson, as well as vineyard owner John Saunders, will explore site-location decisions, planting concerns, trellis designs and vineyard economics. Discipline of Economics: Excel-Based Inventory Tracking and Projections This session will cover cash-flow planning, financing opportunities, inventory projections and small-business compliance. Speakers include Tom Kelly, vineyard consultant and president of the Virginia Vineyards Association; Mike Diehl, portfolio manager and principal credit analyst with Farm Credit of the Virginias; and hospitality industry veteran Melissa Stephen. A Consumer's View (Building a Brand) Learn about developing brand awareness, label design, social media, trademarks and copyrights in this session with branding and marketing strategist Heidi O'Leska, graphics designer Ryan Eagle and Chris Collins, an attorney at Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian. Legal Issues Explore federal, state and county law, licensing/bonding, and ancillary activities with Marybeth Williams, founder of Williams Compliance and Terri Cofer Beirne, counsel for the Wine Institute. New Winery Case Study Attend this session to learn about winery design, cost projections and closing, from Pearmund Cellars owner/winemaker Chris Pearmund, The Winery at Bull Run owner Jon Hickox, and Michael Hughes, project manager responsible for construction of The Winery at Bull Run. Tuesday, March 11, & Wednesday, March 12 Professional Wine Fundamentals Seminar with the International Wine Guild (See description above under Midwest Grape & Wine) VESTA Sensory Evaluation Workshop (See description above under Midwest Grape & Wine) Tour de Vin Regional Wine Tasting and Welcome Reception 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. This social event will be held at the Richmond Marriott. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Wednesday, March 12 General Session with WineAmerica Join this informative panel discussion on multistate issues. Speakers include Mark Chandler, executive director of WineAmerica; Jim Trezise, president of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation; Kevin Atticks, state associations council chairman for the Maryland Wineries Association; and Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association. Meet the Bloggers This session will feature a panel discussion with three of the industry's most influential wine bloggers, moderated by Vineyard & Winery Management editor-in-chief Tina Caputo. Panelists will reveal the types of stories and issues that pique their interest, how they approach their blogs and wine reviews, and the type of communications they'd like to receive from wineries. Panelists will include Fredric Koeppel of BiggerThanYourHead.net, Joe Roberts of 1WineDude.com and David White of Terroirist.com. Brewing Half-Day Session: Home Brew to Brewery 2 – 5 p.m. Steve Parkes, owner and lead instructor of American Brewers Guild will talk about general brewing practices. from raw materials to the bottle.
