Hoffman Jr. William A. Hoffman Jr. passed away on Feb. 11, following a brief illness. Born in Newark, N.J. in 1929, Hoffman graduated from St. Benedict's Prep in Newark; earned a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University, a master's degree from Columbia University and an MBA from New York University. In 1956, he joined Hoffman International Inc. in Piscataway, N.J., a heavy equipment distributorship founded by his father. He worked there until 2002 when he retired as president and chairman. Throughout his career, he served many local and national trade organizations. Hoffman also served as a naval officer in the Korean War both in Korea and on the USS Sarasota and the USS Terribone. Tim Watters, president of Hoffman Equipment and nephew of Bill Hoffman, remembered his uncle as a serious, honest and principled businessman. "Bill had a very professional demeanor in everything he did," Watters said. "He was a tremendously principled man. You never had to worry about having a handshake deal with Bill. He would always do what was right, whether it was with customers, competitors, employees, banks, everybody. He would never try to get one over on you for a couple of bucks." Hoffman's business acumen and philosophy has been handed down to Watters. "I saw in him that even in the worst of times, recessions, and so on, that it is even more important in those times to remain committed to your values and who you are. That's what I'll remember most about Bill." In memory of: 12_industry beat_KP.indd 15 3/27/14 4:23 PM
