A FORMER COMPTROLLER for Joplin, Mo.-based FLI was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison for embezzling $4.9 million from the trucking company where he had worked for 22 years. David VanWinkle of Neosho, Mo., pleaded guilty in Feb- ruary to wire fraud, money laundering and failure to pay taxes. VanWinkle admitted to stealing the money between 2008 and December 2013. A $3.5 MILLION verdict was returned on behalf of the family of truck driver Amarjit Khunkhun of Fresno, Calif., who died in a truck fire caused by an extremely damaged transmission. Early on March 23, 2010, witnesses found a 2000 Freightliner Classic fully engulfed in flames beside Interstate 40 West near San Jon, N.M. Khunkhun's body was found in the sleeper of the truck owned by GMG Trucking of Fresno.
