The quarry had been in operation since 1954 and contained a deposit of high-grade gravel that had been left in the river bottoms over the years. The gravel was mined and hauled across the Bow River to the concrete plant on the other side, which served to build much of the developing south side of Calgary. When the gravel pit closed, it was purchased by Remington Development Corp. that has turned it into a world class "live-work-play" area with a river walk, lots of green spaces, restaurants, stores, homes, and business offices, including Lafarge's western Canada corporate office. The area has been under development for nearly four years now with additional development in the process. The development, Quarry Park, focuses on natural spaces, offering 90 acres of interconnected parks and pathways throughout the community. It is designed to be pedestrian and bicycle friendly so that those who live and work in the community can walk or cycle to work. Much of the development is "green," as recycled concrete and asphalt were used in its construction. Quarry Park also uses an innovative pond and creek system to clean stormwater before allowing it to flow into the Bow River. "We're proud that the new owners decided to call the development Quarry Park in recognition of our former gravel operation," says Vedat Ulugtekin, general manager, aggregate, for Lafarge.
