Travis Olson, 2011 Kwantlen Turfgrass Management program graduate, was named this TRAVIS OLSON year's Toro Future Superintendent Award winner. Olson was one of the top students in his class with a GPA of 3.85 and also Turf Club co-president. He has worked at Kamloops Golf and Country Club for six seasons and will now be travelling to St. Andrews Scotland for a 6 week training and work experience program. The award is given in recognition of the recipient's passion and dedication to their industry and their academic achievement. Nominees are interviewed by a three-person panel composed of representatives from the Toro Company, the industry and the Canadian Golf Superintendent's Association. Olson will also travel to Minneapolis to tour Toro's headquarters and attend the Canadian International Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show in Calgary next February as a guest of the Canadian Golf Superintendent's Association. Toro will also award a personal computer to Kwantlen's School of Horticulture in recognition of Olson's achievement. "We're all very proud of Travis' achievements," adds David Davidson, associate dean of Kwantlen's School of Horticulture. "He's a great representative of the high quality of students that are graduating from our programs. Travis and his instructors truly deserve all the recognition they're receiving with this award." The win comes on the heels of another Kwantlen graduate, Adam Graham, who received the prestigious award in 2010. Graham is now the Assistant Superintendent of the Prince George Golf and Curling Club. The bi-partisan committee charged with investigating and making recommendations for a possible province-wide ban of non-essential pesticides met in August for the second time. There certainly are definitions of all of these terms. As a committee, we can try to come to an agreement about what it is that we mean, but there is some challenge there. Unfortunately, it's not a black and white issue." The first meeting, held on July 6th, was organizational in nature while the August meeting included a briefing from Ministry of Environment staff. Five more meetings have been scheduled with the final taking place December 7th The inaugural 'Kwantlen Cup' Golf Tournament For Turf Research goes Saturday, January 21, 2012.
