number of new pesticides have recently been registered for use on turfgrass. This article provides information on the products that have been registered since the preparation of the 2009 supplement of the IPM for Turfgrass Managers guide. Information is not provided on precautions and directions for use. Please refer to the label for that information. Many of the 'new' fungicides summarized in this article contain active ingredients that are well- known to the turf industry. The pesticides are new because they contain a unique combination of two or more active ingredients. Fungicides that contain multiple active ingredients with different modes of action have the advantages of broader disease control and improved resistance management. Resistance management should always be considered when applying a pesticide. A key practice to protect against the development of pesticide resistance within a pest population is pesticide rotation, i.e. to not repeatedly apply pesticides in the same resistance management group (RMG). If a pesticide (or pesticides in the same RMG) is applied repeatedly to the same field, a gradual or total loss of pest control can occur over time. Pesticides in a RMG have the same target site or mode of action. Once a pest has developed resistance to a particular pesticide, it will be resistant to all of the pesticides in the same RMG. Please follow the recommendations for resistance management on the pesticide label to preserve the efficacy of the product for use on turfgrass. Always read and follow the instructions on the pesticide label; the instructions are developed to maximize product efficacy while protecting workers, crops, and the environment. Please note that the fungicides summarized below are not registered for use around homes or other residential areas such as parks, schools, and playing fields. Civitas™ is a mineral oil-based (98%), broad spectrum fungicide. It acts by inducing systemic resistance in treated turfgrass, i.e. activates the plant's natural defences to kill or inhibit fungal pathogens. Civitas™ is registered for use on golf course turf to suppress Dollar Spot, Grey Snow Mold, Pink Snow Mold, and Spring Leaf Spot when applied as a preventive treatment. It does have curative properties, too. It is intended to be used on fairways and roughs but can be applied to tees and greens as long as it is tested on a small area prior to broad application. Testing is recommended for tees and greens because turf that is cut short can be more susceptible to disease and phytotoxicity. Headway Fungicide™ contains the active ingredients azoxystrobin (RMG 11) and propiconazole (RMG 3). It is registered to be used on golf courses and commercial turf farms to control Anthracnose, Brown Patch, Dollar Spot, Fairy Ring, Fusarium Patch, Grey Snow Mold, Leaf Spots and Melting- Out, Pink Snow Mold, The active ingredients Pythium Blight, Red Thread, and Summer Patch. Apply as a preventive treatment when conditions are favourable for disease development. Instrata® Fungicide contains three active ingredients that have different modes of action, including chlorothalonil (RMG 3), propiconazole (RMG 12), and fludioxonil (RMG M). It is registered to control Grey and Pink Snow Molds on golf course tees, greens, and fairways. Instrata™ can be used on all types of turf except fine fescue. Nivalis is a biofungicide that was recently registered to suppress the development of Grey and Pink Snow Molds on golf courses. The product contains dried mycelium and sclerotia of a fungus, Typhula phacorrhiza strain 94671. This particular fungal strain is active at low temperatures and can suppress the growth of snow mold pathogens by outcompeting them for nutrients and space on snow-covered turf. It is reported to be safe for use on common species of turfgrass, including annual bluegrass, creeping bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass. The Andersons 0.72% Prophesy on DGPro Fungicide contains the active ingredient propiconazole (0.72%), which is a sterol inhibitor in Resistance Management Group (RMG) 3. Propiconazole-containing fungicides, such as Banner MAXX and Qualipro Propiconazole 14.3 ME, have been registered for use on turfgrass for a number of years. The Andersons 0.72% Prophesy on DGPro Fungicide is unique because it uses a dispersible carrier that minimizes mower pickup after irrigation. It is formulated as a granule and provides broad spectrum, systemic control or suppression of Brown Patch, Dollar Spot, and Grey Snow Mold. It is best used in a preventive disease control program. Trilogy™ SC Fungicide contains three active ingredients that have proven efficacy against snow mold diseases. include iprodione (RMG 2), triticonazole (RMG 3), and trifloxystrobin (RMG 11). It is registered for the control of Grey and Pink Snow Molds on golf courses and sod farms. Trilogy™ SC Fungicide is formulated with StressGard, which reportedly improves turf quality coming out of winter. Rhapsody® ASO™ is a broad spectrum, OMRI™-listed biofungicide. It contains a naturally occurring soil bacterium, Bacillus subtilis strain QST 713, which can colonize plant surfaces and out compete disease-causing organisms. It is registered to suppress Anthracnose, Brown Patch, and Dollar Spot on turfgrass in lawns, sod farms, and golf courses (including greens, tees, fairways and roughs). Rhapsody® ASO™ is most effective when applied as a preventive treatment during the early stages of disease development. Herbicides: Fiesta™ is a selective broadleaf herbicide that contains 4.43% iron (present as FeHEDTA). It is registered for use on lawns and turf (e.g. golf courses, parks, cemeteries, and athletic fields) to control algae, black medic, bull thistle, Canada thistle, common chickweed, creeping buttercup, dandelion, dove's-foot geranium, English daisy, false dandelion, lawn burweed, moss, narrow-leaved plantain, slender speedwell, and white clover, and for the suppression of broad-leaved plantain. Visible signs of control may be present a few hours after application. Susceptible weeds will turn brown or black. Occasionally the turfgrass will darken after treatment but it will recover within a few days to weeks. Glutenate™, Prairie Gold ™ Corn Gluten Meal C, and Turf Revolution Corn Gluten Meal are three recently registered herbicides that contain the active ingredient corn gluten meal (99%). The products are registered to inhibit the germination of large crabgrass and dandelion seeds in established turfgrass. However, they Continued On Facing Page
