Mid-summer
Falloff Keeps MDI
in Low Range

oming into the summer season, the Market Demand Index
looked as though it was poised to take off, but a mid-summer
slump kept the MDI in lower ranges throughout most of the
10-week period from June 13 through Aug. 15.
e MDI started the period at 17.40, and rose to a high of 17.49, but
the post-holiday slump took over and the MDI gradually faded to its
lowest point of 12.11 on Aug. 15.
Overall rates followed suit, jumping to a high in the 10-week period
of $2.02 on July 4, but tumbling to their lowest point of the period of
Aug. 15 at $1.84.
Flatbed rates also hit their lowest point on Aug. 15 at $1.81 aer
striking a high of $1.98 on June 13.
Reefer rates fared little better, hitting a high of $2.28 on July 4, then
falling off in the post-holiday period to $2.05 Aug. 15. Reefer rates hit
their lowest rate of $1.99 on July 25.
Specialized rates topped out at $2.30 on June 27 and remained in the
$2.20 range throughout the period, settling at its low of $2.23 on Aug. 15.
Van rates also suffered from the post-holiday slump, falling from a
high of $1.95 on July 4 to its lowest of $1.68 on Aug. 15.
Diesel and all-grade gasoline prices also declined during the 10-week
period. Diesel dropped from a high of $2.44 on June 20 to its lowest
point of the period on Aug. 15 at $2.31. All-grade gasoline fell from a
high of $2.50 on June 13 to a low of $2.26 Aug. 15.
