8 8 V I N E YA R D & W I N E RY M A N A G E M E N T | N o v - D e c 2 016 w w w. v w m m e d i a . c o m Wine Educator and Author Bruce Cass Passes in September Achieving national acclaim as co-author of The Oxford Companion to the Wines of North America, published in 2000, Bruce Cass was a perpetual student and an unforgettable teacher. He was among the first to formally launch a wine education company, dubbed Wine Associates. He taught wine classes at Stanford, UCSF and UC Berkeley. He created the Wine Institute's Wine on Campus curriculum and was one of the West Coast founders of the Society of Wine Educators. He published the Winewright's Register in 1985, and was managing editor of the 1993 James Beard Award-winning book, The Wine Atlas of California. After many years of calling San Francisco, Calif., home, he moved to the Sierra Foothills to tend his garden, immerse himself in the region's wine life and continue teaching both there and in the Bay Area. He's survived by his sister, Janet Cass-Baxter, and two nephews, Evan and Cameron Baxter.
