A panel of judges named Woods the victor in the fourth annual contest. The other two finalists were drivers Michael Lochmiller and Terrance Mathis. "With the talent on stage, the other two guys, I didn't expect to walk away winning it," said Woods, who played "Gran," a song he wrote for his great-grandfather. Woods won $1,000 cash. He also will receive a free recording session and a music video featur- ing the song, courtesy of industry supplier AxleOutPro. He'll also be featured in Overdrive this fall. Woods drives a 1999 Western Star 4964EX and runs mostly in a 500-mile radius around Memphis, Tennessee. He hauls intermodal containers. – James Jaillet A NEW PARTNERSHIP between the National Association of Public- ly Funded Truck Driving Schools, which represents 117 schools, and Fastport Inc., which helps veterans find meaningful employment, has launched a National Standard Reg- istered Apprenticeship Program for Professional Truck Drivers. Its goal is to facilitate the hiring of over 100,000 apprentices over the next four years. CARGO THEFT and truck and trailer theft were down in 2017's second quarter when compared to the same period in 2016. Theft recording firm CargoNet reported 110 tractors stolen, a 17 percent decline, and 109 trailers stolen, down 29 percent. About 150 cargo thefts were reported, down from 79. This year's second-quarter total loss value was $17 million, down from $35 million. TRUCKERS LOST a combined 1,074 pounds by participating in the MATS 2 GATS Fitness Challenge hosted by Stevens Transportation driver Tom Kyrk and ToughTested. The program challenged drivers to lose a combined total of 2,000 pounds, or one ton, between the Mid-America Trucking Show and the Great American Truck- ing Show. Kyrk said 93 drivers participated. PACCAR AND DAIMLER RECALLED nearly 1,800 Ken- worth, Peterbilt, Freightliner and Western Star trucks equipped with Cummins ISX15 engines due to a potential problem that can cause the drive gear on the fuel pump to spin loose on the driveshaft, resulting in the loss of the fuel pump's functionality and possi- bly causing the engine to stall. Paccar's recall number is C1909. Daimler Trucks North America's recall number is FL-744. Owner-operator wins Trucker Talent Search with ode to great-grandfather Richard Woods Ian Holl
