Finkle Jr. out of $920,380. Vidal, a former employ- ee, ran a payroll scam with his two brothers, Angel D. Vidal and Angel Gabriel Vidal, both of whom also pled guilty. Lisa Popewiny, a company payroll clerk, allegedly created false payroll checks for them. MEDICAL EXAMINER Tonya Yawn-Lewis of Helena, Georgia, was arrested for allegedly issuing bogus medical certifications. More than 600 truck operators tested by Yawn-Lewis were told they would have to renew their certifications. A FORMER DOCTOR pled guilty to fraud related to falsifying med- ical exams. Gerald Surya practiced medicine at JFK Medport inside John F. Kennedy Airport. ROLAND BULDOC, a Massachu- setts-based FedEx driver, was named the 2017 Bendix Grand Champion at the American Truck- ing Associations' National Truck Driving Championships, held Aug. 9-12 in Orlando, Florida. Flatbedder Daniel Shonebarger won the 2017 Trucking's Top Rookie award at last month's Great American Trucking Show in Dallas. Shonebarg- er's award package included $10,000 cash, $1,000 worth of DAS Products merchandise and many other prizes. Shonebarger, of Columbus, Geor- gia, drives for Melton Truck Lines. He got his commercial driver's license eight years ago and pulled a reefer for six months. Because he had a young family and needed more home time, he turned to warehouse work. Now that Shonebarger's kids are older, he's returned to trucking. "If you've got a passion for it, keep doing it," Shonebarger said he would tell rookie drivers. "You never know where it's going to take you. You could be here next year." Trucking's Top Rookie award is pre- sented by Truckers News and sponsored by the RoadPro Family of Brands, Rand McNally, Cobra Electronics, Progressive, RedEye Radio and the American Trucking Associations. Recognizing the top rookie driver was the idea of the late Mike O'Con- nell, a former executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Training Asso- ciation. CVTA partners with Truckers News on the contest, along with the Professional Truck Driver Institute and the National Association Of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools. – Deanne Winslett Autism rig takes top honor in Builder's Class Mike Manuel and his "Autism: One of Many" 2015 Peterbilt 389 and 2016 Mac curtainside earned Best of Show in the Builder's Class category at this year's GATS Pride & Polish, held last month in Dallas. It was a second consecutive big win for Manuel, who won a Pride & Polish National Cham- pionship at last year's Great American Trucking Show. Picking up Best of Show in the Lim- ited Mileage Bobtail category was Jake Lindamood, of Irving, Texas, and his 1988 Peterbilt 379. Lindamood built on last year's showing, when he earned first place at GATS in the Company Truck Bobtail class. Guilford, Connecticut-based Jon Donadio's 1996 Kenworth W900 and 2018 East trailer earned Best of Show honors in the Working Combo class. In the Working Bobtail class, Chad and Janie Claypool and Kyle Cousins, of Carthage, Missouri, picked up Best of Show honors. Waterford, Wisconsin-based Bubba Branch's and Dawes Contract Car- riage's 2016 Kenworth T660 and 2018 Globe RGN won Best of Show in the Limited Mileage Combo category. Bradley Wacks, of Waco, Texas, and his Army and Air Force Exchange 2018 International and 2018 Hyun- dai van was selected as the People's Choice award winner.
