DIVERSIONS In the summer of 1939, a tragic accident involving a car and a semi caught the whole corner on fire and burned the original Motor Inn to the ground. The current truck stop immediately was rebuilt in its place. The Corner Rural Ohio truck stop makes being away from home more bearable. By Wendy Parker A wise man once said that any restaurant that has the gumption to post a sign that just says EAT probably has good food. The Motor Inn and Family Restaurant, at the intersection of U.S. Highways 33 and 127 in Mendon, Ohio, is just such a place. This rural truck stop carves 15 acres out of the cornfields to offer a true mom-andpop experience. Referred to as The Corner by locals, it has been a travel stop for as long as anyone in Mercer County can remember. The first time my husband, George, and I stopped in, fewer than 10 big trucks were in the sleep lot, but the parking lot in front of the restaurant was full of cars with local tags. The staff was friendly and treated us like they knew us. The restaurant was packed. The smell of stir fry was in complete contrast to the decor, which was as fried chicken as you could get, all polished wood and gingham. A waitress informed us the special was chicken stir fry. I almost laughed at how funny it seemed to have such a special in a country town, then opened the menu and noticed the first three dinner choices: fried chicken (I knew it), rabbit (half or whole) and frog legs. A ton of comfort food followed and ranged from salmon patties to tapioca pudding. I chose the hamburger steak, my husband the bacon cheeseburger with fries. The food arrived fast and smelled like heaven on a plate a quality piece of ground beef, just thick enough to not be overwhelming. Im pretty sure the mashed potatoes were homemade. We were both too full to be talked into a slice of fresh- TECH BUZZ baked pie. The majority of people staying in the lot had been there before everyone had a mutual respect. The restrooms and convenience store stay open all night, but the sleep lot is far enough away to keep from hearing the traffic. We were able to sleep with the vents open and the truck off.
