(Copyright P.DuPre/AutoWord 2013) Stop Awhile & Enjoy The Rust CHANGING LANES You don't need to tell me that truckers work hard, long hours for days on end hauling the goods we all need for our daily lives. Every time I travel anywhere in Old Red, I am usually surrounded by a fleet of semitrucks because I keep to the slow lane in my aging Jeep. And if I have gotten in the way of any truckers at my 62 mph pace, I apologize and point out that I always exit in favor of a back road whenever possible. Now secondary highways aren't usually driven much by big trucks because you all are on tight schedules and need to make the best time possible. However, if you do have a little time on your hands, I strongly recommend it. Recently, on a road trip to central 24 bloody knuckles 0813 cl.indd 1 Idaho, I had the chance to travel along Highway 26 through much of Washington and Idaho states and was amazed at how little traffic there was mid-week. Even with 60 mph speed limits, there was none of the hustle and bustle of the freeway, and there were enough small towns along the way with cafes that offered good eats and plenty of hot coffee. There was also some fantastic scenery. The vast open spaces of the Palouse offer grand vistas and plenty of derelict farms decorated with falling down buildings and lots of rusting farm equipment. It was somewhere out in the Palouse that I spied the two old work trucks pictured above.
