Heading to Navy Pier, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d been to food trade shows before, but never one created to spotlight one of my absolutely favorite beverages. Te smells waſting from behind the curtains separating the registration tables from the booths inside made me realize immediately it was going to be a wonderfully caffeinated visit. What I didn’t expect was the wealth of information I found about so many things other than coffee (although there was obviously an abundance of that, as well). From coffee roasters to cold brew systems, paper goods to POS systems, agave sweeteners to bakery-style sweets, the aisles were brimming with products and profit potential. Smoothies, I quickly discovered, were the libation of the moment— something writer Brenda Russell knew quite well aſter researching the Sensational Smoothies story that begins on page 12. She had the pleasure of interviewing industry leaders about smoothie trends; I, on the other hand, had the tough job of tasting the enticing new smoothie flavors, boosts and nutritional supplements being sampled on the show floor. I also felt an optimistic “vibe” about what the coming year will hold. Attendees and vendors alike appeared upbeat, and ready to learn about and invest in products to help their businesses grow aſter quite a long dry spell. Contributing editor Peter Surowski discovered that, too, when he contacted shops from coast to coast for this issue’s Regional Update, which focuses on how specialty coffee retailers are feeling about the state of the economy right now. Turn to page 24 to discover what they think the rest of 2011 holds.
