More than one cup a day associated with lower stroke risk With all of the health concerns facing your customers, there’s a bit of good news on the female health front: Women who drink more than one cup of coffee a day have a 22 percent to 25 percent lower risk of stroke, compared with those who drank less, according to a study published in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association, in March. Low or no coffee consumption was associated with an increased risk of stroke in a study of 34,670 women (ages 49 to 83) followed for an average 10.4 years. It’s too soon to change coffee-drinking habits, but the study should ease the concerns of some women, researchers noted. Groups who reported drinking one to two cups per day, three to four cups per day, or five or more cups per day had similar benefits compared with those who reported daily intake of less than a cup of coffee, researchers said. Smoking status, body mass index, history of diabetes, hypertension or alcohol consumption did not change the differences between the groups, indicating Newsmakers are indexed to the first page of the article in which each is mentioned Alfredo Martel, Caribou Coffee .........................................6 Bill Kennedy, Coffee PER, Fallon, Nev.....................................20 Bill Waddington, Tea Source, St. Anthony, Minn..............................38 Bjorn Dhaese, Dillanos Coffee Roasters, Sumner, Wash. ......................1 Bob Stiller, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. ..........................13 Bonnie Charleville, Chauvin Coffee Company, St. Louis, Mo. ...................6 Bryan Baker, DeCoty Coffee Company, San Angelo, Texas ....................16 C.T. More studies on coffee consumption and stroke are needed before firm conclusions can be reached, Larsson said. For more information, visit stroke. ahajournals.org/.
