Here are just a few of happenings unique to Milwaukee’s Summer 2011. • Surround yourself in the beauty of butterflies this summer at the Milwaukee County Zoo’s Butterflies! In Living Color. More than 500 native North American butterflies will be fluttering and floating in a tropical greenhouse setting May 28- Sept. 25. This indoor display also features lush foliage and winding pathways. • The Milwaukee Art Museum again will be the site of a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition, The Emperor’s Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City, June 11-Sept. 11. More than 90 objects from the Qianlong Garden in Beijing will be seen by the public for the first time. The exhibit is part of the museum’s 2011 emphasis on architecture that is drawing an international audience. • The city will be at the center of the table tennis world June 30-July 4 when the U.S. Open Championship brings top competitors to the Frontier Airlines Center. For all the details, visit www.usopenmilwaukee.com. SPiN Milwaukee, one of the only ping pong clubs in the U.S., will be the place to hang out, with a kickoff party and plenty of tables to try out the moves the pros use. 8 • Race fans attending the Milwaukee 225 at the famed Milwaukee Mile on Father’s Day week- end, June 18-19, not only will see seven races in two days, but also changes to IndyCar’s oval race format that promise a greater fan experience. Qualifying order, restarts, and enhanced sound and video are just a few of the exciting changes. • The nation’s best professional water skiers will be at the Veterans Park Lagoon north of the Milwaukee Art Museum Aug. 5-6 for the Malibu Open Championship. This one surprised visi- tors last year, but should draw a big crowd in 2011. • The oldest golf tournament in the country will be played at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club inWauwatosa and Erin Hills near Hartford Aug. 22-28. And, for the firs time, spectators will have the chance to watch the next Jack Nicklaus or TigerWoods play free of charge! Jerry Slaske tells you all about it on Page 46. • Motorcycles mean Milwaukee throughout the riding season, but especially for the Milwaukee Rally. This year, the Rally is Sept. 1-4 with many events planned at the Harley-Davidson Museum and area dealerships. For details, be sure to watchwww.milwaukeerally.com. Whether you’re visiting or just being a tourist in your hometown, you’re in for a summer of fun in Metro Milwaukee.
