CULTURED 149 AMBRA MEDDA Design Dealer Design dealer is arguably the role Ambra Medda was born to play. As the daughter of Giuliana Medda, co-founder of Themes & Varia- tions, the London gallery where Tom Dixon had his first show, she got an early start on the art of acquisition, curation and of course, selling. In 2005, she co-founded Design Miami at the tender age of 23, al- though by then she had already accrued almost two decades of expe- rience. After a five-year run as the fair's director, she left for her own pursuits, including L'Arco Baleno—an online destination offering a mix of retail and editorial spanning a wide range of design, from Hans Wegner armchairs to Bec Brittain lamps. "As far as promising young designers go, I've been keeping an eye on Chen Chen and Kai Williams, Doug Johnston, (whose Crowns basket is seen above), Camilla Barnard and Ana Kras, just to name a few." "Max Lamb really caught my attention in Milan this year. His Marmoreal series for Dzek is just so beautiful." "Tom Dixon was working with my mother a lot when I was a child. He'd show up at the house or at the gallery with incredibly crafted chairs that were so unexpected and beautiful. I remember those pieces really speaking to me, they had so much character." "The best design book I've read was 'In Praise of Architecture,' by Gio Ponti." "The object that I own and hold most dear is my yellow Clay chair by Maarten Baas. It reminds me of his design performance at Design Miami/ Basel in 2007." PHOTOS BY VERA COMPLOJ (MEDDA); © AMBRA MEDDA (DIXON); © DELFINO SISTO LEGNANI (MARMOREAL)
