150 CULTURED Artsy launched in October 2012 as the art-world equivalent of Pandora or Netflix. The website offers collectors a resource for new discoveries, but instead of enlisting the use of carefully-calibrated al- gorithms to search out new work that would appeal to your tastes, it employs specialists—real human beings. At the helm of the design branch is Alex Gilbert, a design world veteran versed in both its his- tory and practice. After studying both architectural design and archi- tectural history, Gilbert worked at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the design department of Phillips. At Artsy, she works with galleries, museums and design fairs to bring their programs on- line and make them accessible to a global audience. ALEX GILBERT Design Specialist "On my to-do list this summer is a visit to La Maison Champs Elysees, the Paris hotel designed by Martin Margiela." "I love the Chelsea apart- ment I share with my boyfriend Patrick Parrish. Any space we've chosen the art and design for, is where I want to be." "I love visiting artist studios. Two of the most recent visits that impressed me were Snarkitecture and Sebastian Errazuriz (pictured above)." "I think Jonathan Nesci is a young designer to watch." "Enzo Mari is one of the great legends of design I have yet to meet. He's a man with a truly fascinating mind and incredible vision. I love his book 'Autoprog- ettazione,' which shows you how to build furniture yourself. It's the most sophisticated DIY ever."
