KEY GOLF Birdie-eye views Southeastern Wisconsin courses just off the freeways By JERRY SLASKE KEYMilwaukee Golf Editor WHENYOU CANsee a golf course fromthe free- way, it’s usually easy to findwithout a GPS.And that’s importantwhen you’re touring a city or region andwould like to get in a round or two in a reasonable amount of time. Look no further than KEYMilwaukee, the only place you’ll find a complete rundown of every golf course you can see fromamajor highway in south- easternWisconsin. FromI-94… Located in Racine County along thewest side of I-94 – about 20miles south of downtown Milwaukee – is themunicipal, links-style IVES GROVE (262-878-3714,www.hhfairway.com- $). While there are 27 holes, play the original 18which has some interesting and challenging holes. SOUTHHILLS, is also in Racine County but on the east side of I-94 (262-835-4441, www.southhillscc.com-$). Call ahead because this sporty, short course (6,300 yards fromthe tips) spe- cializes in outings. There’s nothing outstanding or special about SouthHills, but itwill give you the opportunity to use every club in the bag. InWaukesha County, there are several courses you can see fromI-94, including BROOKFIELDHILLS (262-782-0885,www.brookfieldhillsgolf.com- $) on the south side of highway in theMilwaukee suburb of Brookfield. It’s a fine 18-hole executive course that plays about 4,900 yards fromthe tips. There is plenty ofwater, sand, and trees so it’s no pushover. If time and fun is of the essence, give it a shot. Abit farther out inWaukesha County along the north side of I-94 are the almost contiguous WILLOWRUN(262-544-8585, www.willowrungolf.com- $);WESTERNLAKES (262-691-0900,www.westernlakes.com- $); and NAGAWAUKEE (262-367-2153, www.golfwaukeshacounty.com- $$). WillowRun has come a longway in recent years. While it isn’t all thatmemorable, it still is a decent testwith lots ofwater and small greens. Just down 42 Morningstar is just off I-43 southwest of Milwaukee the road a piece,Western Lakes - as the name implies - also has its share ofwater. In addition, there are elevation changes and large greens. It seems to play longer than the actual yardage; as a result, you knowyou’ve played 18 solid holeswhen you’re finished. The best of the three is themuniNagawaukee. The course is an excellent value, with spectacular views of Pewaukee Lake, significant elevation changes (especially the back nine), tree-lined fairways, and the largest greens in the region and perhaps the state, allwith roller-coaster contours. About 40mileswest of Nagawaukee, again on the north side of I-94, is THEOAKS (608-837-4774, www.golftheoaks.com- $$), a relatively newlinks- style course that iswellworth the drive. With con- ditions close to country club quality, this course provides a real test of your game. Large, contoured greens that arewell guarded are probably its out- standing feature. CONTINUED ON PAGE 44
