Quality  Reliability  Competitive Prices Keep safety in mind when selecting a portable hole digger BY MIKE HALE SALES MANAGER, LITTLE BEAVER, INC. It’s a widely understood rule that digging into the ground can be ex- tremely dangerous. Imperial Colonial Regal Solar Motion Sensor Security Light Solar Path Light Landscape Spotlights 3-Pack Solar One-call phone numbers have been established for every area across the country to help protect operators and let them know what’s below the surface before digging. But the drill it- self can pose a safety threat to the op- erator too. Previously, we’ve touched on dif- ferent models, as well as available ac- cessories to consider when selecting an engine-powered, one-man earth drill. This is why it’s imperative to look for a unit designed with added safety features. When it comes to the equipment’s design, one-man earth drills are typi- cally offered one of two ways. Certain models incorporate the engine and auger into one piece, while some man- ufacturers offer a configuration that places the engine on a wheeled chas- sis, which sits a few feet from the op- eration point. Compared to models that position the engine right on the operator’s han- dle, a separate mounting keeps harm- ful exhaust emissions at a distance. Even in well-ventilated areas, carbon monoxide poisoning is serious, and minimizing its likelihood of occurring in any way will greatly increase oper- ator safety. Furthermore, these styles often utilize a steel torque tube that protects operators from potential harm by transferring digging torque from the drill head to the engine carriage. This allows operators to use larger diame- ter augers without fear of dangerous kickback. Additionally, the torque tube en- hances drilling ease and reduces oper- ator fatigue, effectively improving overall drilling safety. A more alert, less fatigued operator will be more likely to pay attention and handle the drill properly. And easier operation will reduce physical stress on the operator, includ- ing back problems and muscle strains. A pressure relief valve is another
