LAS SENDAS Las Sendas Golf Club, owned by brothers Wayne and Lloyd McBean (Wayne a former NHL hockey pro; Lloyd, a golf pro himself) has undergone $3 million in renovations since they took over in 2008. This first class facil- ity is regularly ranked one of the best courses to play by Golf Digest and one of the top public courses by GolfWorld. Here a gorgeous desert course winds through the Usery Mountains in east Mesa nearly 1,800 feet above sea level, where one can check out almost the entire Valley from the elevated 18th hole. Las Sendas will close from September 29 to October 17 for overseeding and after that all tee times prior to the afternoon rate include a $10 merchandise voucher. Before they close, if you're in the area for a lengthly amount of time, the Punch Pass Special (valid until September 28, 2014) for $299 + tax, gets you 10 rounds including practice facil- ity privileges and use of golf cart. Another thing not to miss is their Happy Hour at The Grille that happens daily from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and all day Monday, featuring a wide variety of food and drink specials. The Bear Championship Course stretches to 6,825 yards from the back tees play- ing to a par 71 and The Cub Executive Course is a fun, sporty par 59, 3,501-yard layout. In addi- tion, they also have a full Practice and Learning Centre, staffed by PGA Professionals who are available for individual and group lessons. Both courses and the practice area were created by the Nicklaus Design Group and architect Bill O'Leary, opening for play in January 2000. Junior and senior discounts are available, check their website for details. More than just a challenging golf experience, several of Emerald Canyon's water hazards are also used as habi- tat for two endangered local fish species, the Razorback Sucker and Bonytail Chub. This initia- tive is part of the reason why Emerald Canyon has been named as Conservationist of the Year by the American Fisheries Society. The par-72 Championship, links- style course, was designed by internationally acclaimed architects Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and stretches to almost 7,000 yards.
