This new facility allows us to bring together employees from our different businesses in a cost- efficient space that meets our current needs and provides us fl exibility for future expansion. What is the biggest barrier to making home automation part of the your business model? HOW I USE MY SYSTEM Talking panels and keypads with Ric Gibbey C HARLOTTE, N.C.-BASED full-service residential security company CPI Security co-hosted this year’s ESX show and conducted tours of its headquarters for ESX attend- ees. Security Systems News had a chance to speak with CPI’s director of operations Ric Gibbey and ask him about his personal use of security. What kind of system do you have, Ric? We just launched the E3 panel, which 2GIG built for us. It’s their panel but we’ve done some customization. The features we like, we enhance, and the ones we don’t, we remove. It’s a touchscreen with all kinds of interactive services. Why is it important Ric Gibbey for you to use secu- rity in your own life? It’s a peace-of- mind thing. I’ve always believed in security. But now I’m thinking we need more than just secu- rity. We need to be more green and look after the earth and our environment. We need to be ready to do more. We’re crossing over into more of an information system than just a security system. Do you have any extras or add-ons? It’s got remote disarming and arming from your phone. It’s got thermostat control. We feel that that’s the wave of the future— not just home automation, but being able to control things. This generation is addicted to getting information and having control of information any time, anywhere. We have video as well. I do really mainly front door/back door video. I have the pool out back and the 14-year-old daughter. So if she asks me, “Can I have a friend over?” I’ll say, “Yeah, but you can’t use the pool.” So I’ll get the alert if the door’s open and I can check the camera to be sure they’re not at the pool. She’s a good kid, but she’s 14. How does your system fi t into your lifestyle? We don’t really use keypads any more. It’s all through the phone. With our hectic lifestyle that’s important. I travel quite a bit, and it’s just good for my peace-of-mind that life is func- tioning as normal. What do you see as a major trend in the industry right now? I think the interactive services on the whole are real game changers. We’ve been the same, three-zone motion detector service for a long time, and I think that interactive control of everything is going to be expected.
