16 EDITORIAL www.securitysystemsnews.com SEPTEMBER 2011 EDITORIAL Securing the World Trade Center site I N LATE July, I was in New York for an interview with the integrators from Diebold and the consultants from Ducibella Venter & Santore, who are working together on sev- eral projects at the new World Trade Center site, including the new Situational Aware- ness Platform Software, and a perimeter access control and surveillance system. Those interviews are the basis for this month's special report, which begins on the front page of this issue. I also had the chance to visit the World Trade Center site with the folks from Diebold and DVS. This is the second time I'd been on site within the last year. I was there in November for an interview with DVS and World Trade Center security director Lou Barani. What struck me during this most recent visit was how much the site has changed in just nine months. Water was flowing through one of two reflecting pools—which are sited on the footprints of the original World Trade Center buildings. There are trees on the plaza around the reflecting pools and the Sept 11 Museum. And, Tower 1, which last Novem- SSN editor Martha Entwistle at the World Trade Center site with Kathryn Bartunek and Brian Coulombe of DVS and Diebold's Paul Woods. ber was much smaller than Tower 7—the only completed tower—now is considerably taller than Tower 7. In July the framework of Tower 1 was above 78 stories. The design of this building—its façade will taper into eight tall isosceles triangles and form an octagon at the building's center—is begin- ning to take recognizable shape. The tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be observed this month by President Obama, heads of state, families of the victims and others here on this site. Construction of the site, which has been ongoing 24/7 for years, will stop for a short time. After the cer- emony, construction will resume and on Sept. 12, the memorial plaza will be open. Within the next few years, the entire site will be open. Unlike those of us in the security industry, who actu- ally come here to learn about and see the security installation, the gen- eral public will be here for other reasons: to shop, work, or to see the memorial museum and plaza. But it's what you can't readily see that will enable the public to have free and open access to this site. It's the security measures that will allow this iconic American site to be returned to the public for the first time in ten years, and into the future.
