SECURITY SYSTEMS NEWS SEPTEMBER 2011 www.securitysystemsnews.com ASIS offers new systems integrator track ORLANDO, Fla.—Systems integra- tors will have their own dedicated educational track at this month's ASIS conference. The new track, composed of 11 sessions, was designed to help integrators learn more about the needs and technical requirements of end users across several vertical markets, Steve Surfaro, lead devel- SPECSPEAK Continued from page 8 started my career enables me to have a deep understanding of the means and methods that are required to complete security technology projects. During the early parts of my career, I worked as a lock- smith, an alarm technician, as a system administrator for a central station and as a manufacturer's representative for several products. As such, I've been exposed to and have a good understanding of the challenges that are faced by installers, manufacturers and the rest of the supply chain. Of course, this comes as both a blessing and a curse. Anyone that has ever been in a blazingly hot attic in mid- August or has been on a ladder in a blizzard knows how critical the little things, like a clean mechanical-elec- trical splice connection, are. After the first time you've been in a crawl space under a house with a dead cat star- ing at you, coughing from the combination of dust and mold, all because the last technician didn't bother to make a proper splice, you demand a perfect splice every time. Of course this is just one example of an infinite amount of finite details on every project ranging from physical installation issues to software challenges. The blessing is being able to foresee the future prob- lems and protect our clients. The curse is trying to explain to an experienced veteran contractor that the way they've been doing some- thing for 30 years won't be acceptable this time. Ben Franklin once said, "Watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." In security sys- tem installations, I make sure to watch the pennies. SSN —Martha Entwistle Specifically Speaking features a Q-and-A with a different secu- rity consultant every month. "Systems integrators will walk away from these sessions better equipped to address these markets, provide meaningful solutions, and rein- force their value to current and potential clients," he said. Also new at this year's confer- ence, which will feature more than 200 educational sessions in 22 tracks over four days, is a collaboration with (ISC)2, the world's largest certifying body for IT security professionals. The certifying body is co-locating its first (ISC)2 Security Congress at the ASIS show, which will include educational sessions for IT secu- rity professionals and a new area on the exhibit floor dedicated to innovations in information secu- rity solutions. The combined ASIS and (ISC)2 conferences, a result of a memo- randum of understanding signed by both organizations late last year, are expected to attract upwards NEWS 9 of 20,000 attendees. "This agree- ment reflects the rapidly evolving, converging roles of the informa- tion security and traditional secu- rity professionals within the global business marketplace," Raymond T. O'Hara, president of ASIS, said in a statement. This year's exhibit floor will be more than 230,000 sqare feet, with roughly 700 companies exhibiting their products and services.
