"Many a heated battle was fought during this phase of the project on these reloca- tions and the costs associated with them. There were also aesthetic issues that were assumed by the architect. They had envisioned a much different type of fence layout and were very dis- The caissons were drilled 36 inches x 5 feet deep and produced a significant amount of excavated mate- rial, Knorr said. The posts weighed approximately 650 pounds. Each of the posts had to be precisely positioned (¼ inch toler- ance in an entire fenceline) and braced for exact location, level and height with rebar cages installed that would maintain these when the 1¾ to 2 yards of concrete was poured into each cais- son around the posts. Steel plates had to be welded to the bottoms of these posts so that no concrete would enter the posts, as they would later be filled with concrete as part of the cable in- stallation. Once the horizontal rails and ver- tical pickets were installed, the 1½ inch cables were installed and imbed- ded into the posts and the posts were filled with concrete. This completed the installation of the fence sections. About one-third of the way into the fence installation crews encoun- tered a problem area due to an adjacent business's parking lot being consider- ably higher than the fence system on mayed that they could not alter the de- sign for street appeal/curb appeal and still be able to meet the criteria that was tested and approved for the crash rated requirements. "Ultimately, the fence system was installed per manufacturers' approved design criteria and was aesthetically appealing," Knorr noted. Installation of the fence system drew a lot of onsite spectators, includ- ing government officials and other trade contractors who had never seen anything of this sheer magnitude. It's proof I'm living the Pete and Jake life. I was on my first gate operator in- stallation, and basically didn't know what I was doing but they had sent me out alone anyway. Basically told me to read the instructions and call the man- ufacturer if there were problems. "You can handle it," they assured me. When I had everything mounted and in place, I turned on the power. The unit slowly started smoking, but I thought, "Aw, it's just some dust burn- ing off." But it did not stop smoking; in fact, flames started roaring out of the housing. I thought to myself, "I really don't think it's supposed to do that." Then I woke up. Probably a good thing; the boss would have fired me anyway. Is this sad or what?
