Holiday Activity Guide Impressionism exhibit seen only at Milwaukee Art Museum IMPRESSIONISM:Masterworks on Paper, the MilwaukeeArtMuseum's lastmajor exhibition of the year featuringmore than 100 drawings, watercolors and pastels by Impressionists and Post- Impressionists, will be seen in no othermuseumin the U.S. Organized by themuseumin partnershipwith the Albertina in Vienna, the exhibition is receiving posi- tive reviews in nationalmedia. It closes out the year- long anniversary celebration of themuseum's inter- nationally known Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion. "This is a scholarly exhibition devoted almost exclu- sively toworks on paper andwill considerably extend our current knowledge of Impressionismand Post-Impressionism," said LaurieWinters, director of exhibitions at theMilwaukeeArtMuseum. "Masterworks on Paper shows that the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists chose to emphasize draw- ing, thereby ceasing to recognize the traditional distinction between drawing and painting. They elevated the status of drawing to the level of paint- ing itself." Some of the greatest artists in the history of Western European art, includingManet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, Seurat, Gauguin, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Toulouse-Lautrec, createdworks on paper thatmay be lesswell-known than their paintings, butwhich are just as significant. It is notwidely known that a large proportion of the artwork shown in the eight Impressionist exhi- bitions held in Paris between 1874 and 1886were works on paper. Many of these have been identi- fied are shown inMasterworks on Paper. Ms.Winters also pointed out in an interviewthat the exhibition includesmany outstanding artists who are not always in Impressionismexhibitions - 36
