GIE+EXPO Post-show Recap A John Kmitta s I write this, I have just returned from the Green Industry & Equipment Expo (GIE+EXPO) in Louisville, Ky. With the latest outdoor power equipment, educa- tional opportunities, abundant networking possibilities, the latest in hardscapes, great entertainment on Fourth Street Live, and much more, the show was once again packed from start to finish. Some news and highlights from the show are as follows: * The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) announced the completion of fuels testing on Briggs & Stratton small engines for a side-by-side evaluation of the performance, durability and emissions of ethanol and isobutanol fuel blends. Results show that isobutanol fuel blends provided by Gevo, Inc., do not cause any irregular or unstable engine or perform- ance issues, suggesting that isobutanol could help meet the renewable fuel mandate with minimal-to-no impact on existing equipment and off-road vehicles. "We are pleased with the results of isobutanol testing," said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of OPEI. "It shows us that isobutanol could be a biofuel alternative that can be introduced into the existing supply chain without the potential disruption and harm to our outdoor power equipment engines." * Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power introduced the Power Code quick response (QR) code to its Vanguard single-cylinder and V-twin engines. The Vanguard Power Code is a square barcode located on the engine that, after being scanned with a smart phone's barcode reader, directs the user to an array of important information for that specific engine model. Most no- tably, the Vanguard Power Code will provide the equipment operator with troubleshooting in- formation especially suited for in-field support. * Core Outdoor Power, a manufacturer of GasLess outdoor power products and equip- ment, introduced a line of emission-free, handheld power equipment for the consumer and commercial markets. The company showcased its environmentally friendly grass trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, lawn mowers and backpack blowers. In the spring of 2012, Core will debut the CGT400 Trimmer, the first component in the GasLess family of products. * We at Green Media (publisher of Landscape and Irrigation magazine) had news of our own during GIE+EXPO when we announced the 2011 selections for our "Most Influential Peo- ple in the Green Industry" recognition program. The 2011 selections for "Most Influential People in the Green Industry" recognition are 1030 W. The 2011 "Most Influential People in the Green Industry" will be profiled in the January editions of all four of Green Media's Green Industry publications. * Following GIE+EXPO 2011, PLANET and the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) extended their partnership with OPEI and GIE+EXPO through 2018. "With our industry constantly evolving, the GIE+EXPO allows green industry profession- als the most opportunity for exposure to all aspects of our industry," said PLANET President Jerry Grossi, Landscape Industry Certified Technician. "This partnership promotes strong com- munication between the different segments of our industry." GIE+EXPO is scheduled to be held in Louisville at the Kentucky Exposition Center for the foreseeable future. There was obviously much more to GIE+EXPO 2011 than I can cover here.
