CLAYTON, Ala. – Boyd Bros.' driver Robert Hayes is the carrier's most recent professional driver to reach his three millionth safe mile. Staying safe on today's roads and city streets is challenging for motorists everywhere, but driving a tractor-trailer without an accident for three decades is an accomplishment Boyd Bros. Transportation is proud to recognize. "Honestly, we thank God for drivers like Robert who are not only professional and on-time, but he is so aware of the well-being of others and avoiding dangers. He makes the roads safer for all of us," says Betty Nix, director of recruiting at Boyd Bros. Transportation, Inc. Hayes has driven for Boyd Bros. since the late 1980s and is still amazed at how the industry has changed over the years. "When I got out of the Army in 1971, diesel fuel was 12¢ per gallon," he recalls with a laugh. "Back then you didn't have to worry about other drivers' texting on their phones or playing on a tablet. That's the challenge: Being aware every second." Driving all over the Midwest and Southeast, Hayes hauls a variety of freight including steel, insulation and other materials. "I have always enjoyed being at Boyd. Where I'm from in Mississippi, it can be hard to find good jobs. Boyd Bros. has been a great career home for me for so many reasons," Hayes says. "First, there's great pay and equipment; but I just appreciate how I'm treated. Some companies have an open door policy right up to the moment you have a problem and need to walk through that door. At Boyd Bros., you can call literally any person at the company with a question and you'll get a call back." Beyond advantages on the job, Hayes says the company's benefits have been invaluable to him and his family. "When my wife got cancer, the company's insurance really saved us," he says. "She's a real fighter and I am so proud of her. I am very grateful that Boyd Bros. was with me during that time." Boyd Bros. showed its appreciation to Hayes by hosting a cookout to celebrate among family, friends, and co- workers. "The owner of the company asked me what I wanted to eat at the cookout and I jokingly said 'steak and lobster'," he said. "I was shocked at the cookout when they served steak and lobster to my family!" In addition, he was honored with an acclamation from the governor of Alabama, prizes and a generous bonus. For Boyd Bros. Transportation, this level of dedication to safety sets its drivers apart. "We really are so very thankful for these driving professionals and feel very blessed to have someone like Robert Hayes on our team," said Chris Cooper, President of Boyd Brothers Transportation.
