Golf CONTINUED FROM PAGE 46 exit #93) www.fireridgegc.com - Solid championship course with great conditions. Hard to find any weaknesses. Brown Deer – 7835 North Green Bay Rd. (about two miles west of I-43 on Milwaukee's north side, exit I-43 west at Good Hope Rd.) www.milwaukeecountygolfcourses.com/brown_details – Once a regular stop on the PGA tour known as the U.S. Bank Championship, this is the course where Tiger Woods turned pro. Stay in the fairways and you have a chance in this park- land setting highlighted by mature trees and tough rough. Quit Qui Oc – 500 Quit Qui Oc Lane in Elkhart Lake (about 18 miles west of Sheboygan, exit I-43 at Highway 28) www.quitquioc.com – Don't let the fact that you can't pro- nounce the name stop you from playing this rolling, tree- lined, demanding course. A target golfer's paradise, it's high- lighted by small pedestal greens on many holes. The name means "crooked river" in the language of the Menominee Indians. Whispering Springs – 389 Whispering Springs (about 35 miles west of Sheboygan on Highway 23 in Fond du Lac) www.whis- peringspringsgolf.com – It might sound cliché, but this course is truly one of the state's hidden gems. Conditions are impeccable and the layout is just short of spectacular. You won't find a better 9th or 18th hole anywhere. One of the state's best and best values. While just a bit more out of the way, you might also want to tee it up at… Erin Hills – 7169 County Road O in Erin (about 35 northwest of Milwaukee) www.erinhills.com – Last year this course hosted the U.S. Men's Amateur won by Kelly Kraft. In 2017, it will welcome the granddaddy of them all, the U.S. Open. Golf and pull carts are not permitted. Washington County – 6439 Clover Road in Hartford (about 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee) www.golfwcgc.com – This Arthur Hills-design, links-style course sits high above the surrounding countryside. It's always windy, no matter how calm it may be just a few miles away. Every hole is excellent and the bentgrass tee- to-green conditions are second to none. ALSO COMING UP IN JULY: Heroes for Kids Pro-Am at The Legend at Brandbrook in Wales (about 30 miles west of Milwaukee), July 29-30. PGA Tour pros Steve Stricker, Mark Wilson, Jerry Kelly, Skip Kendall, J.P. Hayes and others will be there to play and help raise money for charity. Golf Channel commentator and entertainer David Feherty also will make an appearance. Check the June issue of KEY Milwaukee for more information. 48
