44 nJuly 2016n www.thunderpress.net THUNDER PRESS by Sheila LaPolla FAIR OAKS, CALIF., MAY 28—The 18th annual Memorial Day Ceremony was held on May 28 at the Fair Oaks Cemetery, California. Hundreds of fl ags lined the roadway of the cemetery deemed "The Avenue of Flags." A parade of American Legion Riders (ALR), Chapter 383, rolled in to the delight of attendees. All veterans who served our country were honored. This year's Memorial Day theme paid special tribute to Pearl Harbor survivors. Recognition and honor were given to retired 96-year-old World War II Army veteran Col. Samuel Clower repre- senting all Pearl Harbor survivors and President Franklin D. Roosevelt (a.k.a. actor Joe Hart) eloquently reenacted the "Day of Infamy" speech given to Congress in 1941. The Fair Oaks Memorial Day Ceremony par- ticipants and the audience thanked and honored the ultimate sacrifi ce given by our fallen heroes. A wreath was placed by American Legion Post 383 Commander Mark Rice and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6158 Commander Alex Briones to honor the fallen veterans buried in the historic Fair Oaks Cemetery. Let us preserve the freedom and love of country our veterans have so valiantly fought for, and not take for granted our soldiers who still give of themselves for the freedom we enjoy today. The American Legion Riders, who are a group of veterans from across the nation that love motorcycle riding, give thanks and recognition to all our veterans reminding us freedom is not free. 4 Short and sweet Mid Side Zip All Leather Waterproof Boots Ridge Outdoors Sizes: Reg.: 4–11-1/2, 12–15, Wide: 7–11-1/2, 12–15 Black #8003ALWP, $143 Ridgeoutdoors.com Reviewed by Shadow It's Monday of Daytona Bike Week, and my cold-weather riding boots are causing me a great bit of discomfort. They were fi ne for the 20-degree winter chill when I left my home in New Jersey, but it's now over 80 degrees and my feet can't stand the heat. I see Ridge Outdoors' booth on Beach Street and lit- erally hotfoot it over there. Several years ago, I acquired a pair of Ridge Outdoors 9000 Ultimate Motorcycle Boots, and I was quite pleased with the comfort and quality. This time, I wanted boots for the warmer months, but with waterproofi ng and all the other features that made the 9000 Ultimates some of the best boots I've owned. Jeremy Granger, sales and marketing manager at Ridge Outdoors, knew exactly what I was looking for and brought me a pair of the Mid Side Zip All Leather Waterproof Boots. The boots feature a full-grain leather upper with the lining layers comprising "vapor wick" to let your feet breathe, and a Walotex water- proof and blood-borne pathogen-proof membrane (the latter for tactical and medical use). Double and triple stitch- ing provides plenty of reinforcement at the seams, and the D-ring type closed eyelet prevents the laces from coming undone. The zipper is YKK with a hook-and-loop zipper keeper at the top, and is backed by a waterproof webbing. Like a little kid, I wore them right out of the booth, packing my winter boots in my saddlebags, never to see the light again until it was time for me to head north to New Jersey. Six days of wearing these boots convinced me they'd be great for my ride to Sturgis in August, or a ride anywhere, for that matter. The 6-inch height is enough to cover my ankles, yet allows my legs to stay cool in the summer heat. The boots weigh only about a pound each, and the "New Generation Air Heel System" cushions each foot so they aren't sore after a long day of all the riding, walking and standing I do while attending rallies. The boots also have a removable "Tru-Fit" insole, a nice feature if you choose to use gel inserts, but I haven't found the need as the boots are quite comfortable with- out any extra help. The outsole is a slip-resistant car- bon rubber, and the lug-style bottom surface provides a sure grip in the dirt, mud, concrete or pavement. It did rain in Daytona while I was there, and the waterproofi ng properties functioned perfectly. This boot is now top on my list of grab-and-run boots, as it's suited for any type of road conditions. If you're looking for a comfortable, light, sturdy boot that you can wear in temperate weather, the Mid Side Zip All Leather Waterproof Boots could become one of your favorites, too. 4 18TH ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY For the love of freedom American Legion Riders honor our fallen American Legion Post 383 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6158 honor the fallen veterans buried in the historic Fair Oaks Cemetery Choose the Inbox Instead of the Mailbox Less Waste.
