10 nJuly 2016n www.thunderpress.net THUNDER PRESS by Don Kline MONTCLAIR, CALIF., MAY 21—The 16th annual show took place in the parking lot of Pomona Valley Harley-Davidson, running from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There were 30 or so motorcycles in the show—of course most were Harley-Davidson but there were a few other brands mixed in. There was what the owner calls a Hot Henderson, with a 1926 engine in a 1923 Long Tank frame. Henderson made motorcycle from 1912 to 1931. This motorcycle won the award for Best Vintage pre-1960. There were shiny bikes and some not so shiny, some covered in custom paint and chrome and some with rust, or shall we say patina, on them. The show was laid out in a box fashion with the stage in front of the dealership. The motorcycles entered in the show had their area appropri- ately up front. The cars and trucks were on the other side. There were about 20–25 cars in the show, and the reason I say that is that a few cars left before the show ended and a few came in a few hours after the show started. There was a mix of trucks, vans and hot rods like a 1932 Ford coupe-style rod and a Chevrolet Greenbrier Van. Never heard of a Greenbrier? Let me tell you about it. From 1961 to 1965 Chevrolet built a van based on the Corvair engine, which was a 2.4 liter H-six cylinder layout. The van has its engine in the back—think of it as Chevy's version of the VW bus. They also made a pickup version. That is one of the cool things about these shows: you never know what might show or you will fi nd. The fi rst band playing was Randy "BRD" Romero also known as Big Rockin Daddy and the Usual Suspects, a popular band that plays all over, performing everything from blues to classic rock. It is very enter- taining to see BRD get down with his selection of harmonicas. I really liked it when they played the song "Black Magic Woman." The next band was Smoking Guns—they call themselves a classic rock band and they do just that, playing songs from the Allman Brothers Band, Rolling Stones and Johnny Cash to name a few. On the front sidewalk of the building were the tents for the raffl e prizes and there was a variety of good stuff being raffl ed off, everything from clothing, art, and garden tools to tote bags. Foothill Family Shelter, an organization that helps families in need, were there selling $10 raffl e tickets for a chance to win a brand new Sportster Iron 883; not enough money was raised so the winner ended up with a cash prize of $3,692. Near 4:00 p.m. they started announcing winners of the various categories for the vehicles entered in the show. When the Best of Show Motorcycle was announced, the one numbered B12, it was gone. Fortunately, I photographed all the vehicles when I arrived so at least I can share a picture of it. Pomona Valley has events going on all the time. They have an events page on their website and post regularly on their Facebook and Instagram pages, or call their friendly concierge at 909.981.9500. They are located at 8710 Central Avenue, Montclair, CA 91763. 4 16TH ANNUAL HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND HOT ROD SHOW Where is B12? You never know what you'll see Big Rockin Daddy performs with The Smoking Guns Band Best of Show Winner, the missing B12 The Best Vintage pre-1960 went to this Henderson
