If the patient is in shock, cover with a blan- ket to maintain body heat. 5. Loosen restrictive clothing. 6. If the victim is conscious, ask permission to render aid. 7. To avoid your risk of disease, wash hands before and after giving care, try to put a barrier such as gloves or a cloth between you and the patient's bodily fluids, don't eat, drink or touch your mouth, nose or eyes when giving aid. 8. In most cases, you don't want to move the patient. However, immediate rescue is war- ranted when there is: a. Danger of fire or explosion b. A serious traffic hazard c. Risk of drowning d. Exposure to extreme cold, heat or severe weather e. Danger of a collapsing structure f. Electrical injury or potential injury g. Pinning by machinery h. Asphyxia due to lack of oxygen or the presence of toxic gases (only if the first aid provider is trained on how to identify and protect himself/herself from oxygen deficient air.)
