T he November issue of Water Well Journal focuses on global water and contains a feature story ideal for anyone involved with volunteering for water relief projects overseas. Along with that content and the monthly assortment of columns and departments, the November issue also contains a section titled "Groundwater Week at a Glance" on page 31. The section details some of the happenings that will take place at Groundwater Week 2016, December 6-8 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The section also contains on page 36 a list of the companies slated to be in the Exhibit Hall. WWJ caught up with Peter McCornick, Ph.D., PE, D.WRE, who will present the 2016 Groundwater Week Keynote Session, in the Groundwater Week Q&A on page 42. McCornick, an internation- ally known expert in water, food, and environmental research, will present "Water for Food Security: Solutions for the Context." McCornick, the new executive director of the Daugherty Water for Food Institute at the University of Nebraska, will draw on insights gleaned from his work in Africa and Asia, as well as the United States. He'll give particular emphasis to agricultural water management solutions in terms of tech- nologies, practices, and policies; and to the opportunities to address the sustainabil- ity of critical groundwater resources. Freelance writer Jennifer Strawn profiles Todd Hunter, CWD/PI, on page 46 in the feature article titled "Championing Professionalism." Hunter, the owner of Ground Water Pump Systems in Boulder, Colorado, will become NGWA's president at Groundwater Week. Hunter is one who likes the mechanical aspect of the groundwater industry and values learning. Those two things came together when he worked on the development of the ANSI/NGWA-01-14 Water Well Construction Standard. He said he feels always learning how to best do things will raise the professionalism of everyone in the industry, something he thinks is vital to the success of the industry. Author Joe Haynes provides a feature story that should be read by anyone plan- ning to work overseas on relief projects. Titled "Safety Secures Success" and be- ginning on page 20, Haynes goes over concerns for those heading abroad and offers tips to assure workers will avoid accidents and achieve success. Haynes mentions preparation starts long before boots are on foreign ground and workers need to make sure they have the proper immunizations for where they are travelling, that they are bringing the proper clothing and equipment for the environ- ment they are working in, and go over the roles they will have at the job site. Also discussed are preparing the job site, equipment maintenance, and cleaning the equipment, all vital to ensure safety and success when drilling in an unfamiliar terrain. The latest installment of the People at Work column by Alexandra Walsh is titled "Ten Employment Laws Every Supervisor Should Know" on page 56. She em- phasizes supervisors and managers have a responsibility to make sure their working relationship with their employees complies with federal and state employment laws. She then goes over 10 federal laws that she feels are the most important to know. Some of the regulations may seem obvious, like job discrimination, but others may not and Walsh provides detail on all 10 laws. Among the other laws that made Walsh's top 10 are military leave, gender pay differences, and workplace safety.
