Developing Nations Fund Helps Improve Quality of Life The National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation's Developing Nations Fund provides small assis- tance grants to benefit the quality of life for people in devel- oping economies around the world without access to plentiful supplies of potable ground- water. Running Water 5K and 10K Challenge Accepted by NGWA Staff Members NGWA staff members took part in the first Running Water 5K and 10K Challenge on October 2 on the campus of The Ohio State University. Participating were NGWA CEO Kevin McCray, CAE, and his wife, Gayle; Water Well Journal Editor Thad Plumley and his wife, Claudia; Membership Services Specialist Alex Beaty and his wife, Tina; and Event and Content Coordinator Yulia Vanchosovych. Registration fees from the event helped provide safe water to 3000 people in Kenya. Greif and Partners for Care provide water backpacks de- signed to ease the burden for those who have to carry safe water to their homes by hand. The packs hold 5.2 gallons of water, are lightweight, ergonomic, and feature a liner that can be sanitized in sunlight. Some of the race participants wore backpacks holding one and two gallons of water as they ran the course. Groundwater Industry Strongly Promoted 2016 Protect Your Groundwater Day The importance of protecting groundwater received a strong push from the groundwater industry itself during the seventh edition of Protect Your Groundwater Day on September 6, organized by NGWA. Nearly 200 government, private, and nonprofit organiza- tions promoted the NGWA event in some fashion. Even more signed on as "Groundwater Advocates" by committing to promote groundwater protection in connection with the September event. Twitter @WaterWellJournl WWJ November 2016 19 Certification exams administered by the National Ground Water Association in August, with eight of those passing. Also administered were 40 licensing exams, with 22 passing. Newly Certified Well Drillers (CWDs) in August, including William Walker of West Columbia, South Carolina; Tyson Davis of Templeton, California; and Vincent Jardot of Manalapan, New Jersey. New members NGWA registered in August. The total consisted of 69 scientists and engineers, 53 contractors, 20 students, 15 government/academic professionals, 7 manufacturers, 6 suppliers, and 2 associates. NGWA will offer the webinar, "Legally Structuring Your Business Activities to Comply with New Electronic Logging Device Laws" by Tony Verillo, who owns and operates Vista Transportation Safety Consulting, a private consulting firm dedicated to assisting the trucking and motor coach industries with navigating the often complicated and confusing maze of DOT safety regulations.
