The Department of Energy recently announced $137 million in grants to heavy-duty engine and truck manufacturers for the development of the next SuperTruck iterations, awarding $20 million each to Cum- mins (in partnership with Peter- bilt), Daimler (maker of Freight- liner), Volvo and Navistar (maker of International). The DOE announced the SuperTruck II program earlier this year. The goal, it says, is to double so-called freight efficiency on Class 8 tractor-trailers by driving down fuel consumption. The program follows up on the original SuperTruck program, which handed out the same $20 million to major truck and engine makers in 2010 to improve fuel economy over 2009 tractor-trailers by 50 percent. The grant recipients, like last time, will also match the DOE's $20 mil- lion with $20 million of their own research and development funds, meaning each SuperTruck developer will have $40 million with which to build their SuperTruck. by James Jaillet 14 www.bigrigowner.com N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 6 High Performance Diesels > Several major truck, engine makers awarded $20M to build SuperTruck II Freightliner's 2015-unveiled SuperTruck, which was built with funding in the first SuperTruck program.
