NEW YEAR, NEW RIDE. "Most people would have overlooked me, but he didn't." The Hicks ended up buying a full- dress trike for Ramona, even though it wouldn't be until spring that she could enjoy it without snow on the roads. When March rolled around, Dan and Ramona took their toy hauler to Lone Wolf Harley-Davidson for the stabled rides. A nearby vacant parking lot of a large relocated business provided the elbow room needed to get re-acquainted with riding. Not many weeks after, Ramona took Washington State's side- car rider training in Yakima and passed. But Ramona credits another with the strides she's enjoyed, saying, "The Lord used the bike to heal me." She continued to use her crutches, but began putting on some serious road miles with and without Dan along, just strapping her crutches on the back. The fi rst week of July 2013 they base camped out of Clarkston, Washington, at Hell's Canyon RV park on the river there. Dan was on his own ride and Mona (as Dan calls her) with her three wheels. As they were headed out from base one morning Dan real- ized she'd left her crutches behind. Intending to grab them for her she gen- tly stopped him, saying, "I'm not going to take them." She hasn't since. The two ride quite a lot now, and these days they're riding with a pal. Ramona and Dan (pictured) take along their German Shepherd Harley as often as they can. Ramona uses the sidecar unit when Harley wants to come along, but rides her newer Harley Freewheeler when the pooch stays at home with his totally black feline sidekick, Evil. Dan and Ramon's daughter Mariah moved out of the area with her family in granddaughter Sommer's sophomore year of high school. When Sommer and her two best girlfriends wanted to return to graduate as Wildcats from Creston High School, one of the girls had family locally, but Mariah's girlfriend Charlie would need a host family. Dan explained, "so we adopted her" unoffi cially. Charlie and Mariah got their wish, the three girlfriends graduating together in the tiny class of nine students. The two girls had an extra adven- ture when they accompanied Dan and Ramona to the 70th Sturgis rally. This left the teenagers believing that Dan and Ramona are indeed "the coolest grandparents ever." 4 "Where am I?" Continued from page 68
