Voices 8 | Overdrive | June 2017 Overdrive Senior Editor Todd Dills had the opportunity in mid-April to visit Truck World in Hubbard, Ohio, just east of Youngstown. The indepen- dent stop has all manner of amenities and an old mall-like interior atmo- sphere — and particularly great pork chops on the full-service sit-down restaurant's menu. Coincidentally, just two days after Dills took the picture at right, reader Martin Hill wrote in with news that he'd come across a "brand-new Truck World truck stop" on Interstate 76, Exit 57 (Bailey Road), in North Jackson, Ohio, on the other side of Youngstown. "The friendly employ- ees said the place has been open three weeks," Hill wrote. "It's com- pletely empty, with lots of parking. … Everything is brand-new — they have showers, too." If it's anything like the Hubbard location, it won't be empty for long. Recent polling showed that inde- pendent stops are among those most favored by readers. Attendant to that polling and the Trucker Path app's release of its best-rated stops, readers weighed in with their own picks for the best truck stop. A few responses from Overdrive's Facebook page follow. Search "best truck stops" at OverdriveOnline.com to weigh in with your own sugges- tions. Chris Harkins: P&H in Wells River, Vt. Real food, and they cater to the drivers first. Big parking lot, friendly staff! Glenn Kuehne: Pine Cone Truck Stop, Madison, Wis. Don Sullivan: It's not a truck stop, but Pete's Cafe on I-55 at the Dwight, Ill., exit has lots of truck parking and the best food. No buffet, but a great menu and an awesome dessert selection, not to mention affordable prices! I always planned my meal stop at Pete's when I was trucking in that area! Cody Blankenship: I always enjoyed Garden of Eden truck stop in Eden, Idaho. But I don't consider myself a truck stop connoisseur. ... I've spent a lot of overnights sleeping in a field waiting to load, which I prefer any- way. Who wants to wonder if there is parking everywhere you go? Dawn Drilling: Maverick Travel Center, Santo, Texas. Sapp Brothers — all of them, but oh, the showers they have in Denver! Bigger than my apartment. Mt. Vernon, Mo., TA still pumps fuel if you want them to. Mark Break: I just stopped in the Petro in York, Neb., last week and was surprised with a prime rib buffet that was priced fairly and was good. Been a long time since that's happened. Carter Shaw: Dysart's, just south of Bangor, Maine, is just about the only good one left. They still fuel your truck for you and have a fantastic restaurant. Indie truck stops remain popular Todd Dills Readers were asked to caption this idyllic scene, posted in March to the Reader Rigs gallery at OverdriveOnline.com by John Reinhardt. "From sun-up 'til down- hole," suggested Craig Veccellio, summing up Reinhardt's day. The shot depicts an early sunrise in the oil patch in Texas "way out in nowhere" north of Pecos, Reinhardt wrote. The hauler and his Freightliner were "waiting to be escorted six miles up a poorly graded well road to deliver poly pipe at a water storage facility used for drilling operations." Find more reader-sub- mitted pictures, or share your own, via the gallery at OverdriveOnline.com/cus- tom-rigs-gallery. An early start in the oil patch 93% Percentage of Overdrive readers who reported in April they missed the prevalence of mom-and-pop independent truck stops. A third of respondents singled out sit-down full-service restaurants as a missed feature. From sun-up 'til down-hole …
