While the spotlight is on wines from the East, Midwest and eastern Canada, this year IEWC was opened to all international wineproducing regions. The eastern wines were judged separately, and only the "best of the best" eastern wines advanced to the Sweepstakes round. As in previous years, a taste-off was held to determine the Riesling Champion. From among more than 1,150 entries, the 21 Brix Winery 2011 Vidal Ice Wine, Lake Erie, was chosen as the Sweepstakes winner. "The wines in this year's competition were simply stunning," said Debra Del Fiorentino, director of 104 V I N EYARD & WINERY MANAGEMENT | wine competitions for Vineyard & Winery Management. "Our panel of judges, which included a diverse collection of wine media, educators and vintners from both the East and West coasts, noted that the winning wines were elegant, exemplary examples of the varietals." Judges awarded a total of 15 double-gold medals, 104 gold med- als, 298 silver medals, 308 bronze medals and 35 Best of Class awards. Judges also named five wines as Best of Show in their respective categories. The winner of this year's Riesling Championship was the Laurentide Winery 2011 Riesling from Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula.
