OFFERING FLEXIBILITY At Millbrook Winery in New York, David Bova is general manager of the Hudson Valley's largest winery. For the 10 full-time employees there are standard benefits and there's very little turn- over, "because we try to treat our employees right," he said. In addition to offering flexible work hours, especially for parents who want to attend their kids' school programs or games, the winery offers performance bonuses when revenues outpace expenses. "Typically the bonuses are generous, depending on how well we beat the budget and how well we're doing," Bova said. "It keeps everybody motivated, also it keeps everybody informed. As general manager, I want everybody to feel like a partner and like they have a hand in our success." As for attrition, Bova said he rarely sees anybody leave Millbrook, or leave the wine industry, for that matter. "There's no replacing the wine industry," he said. "It's a fun and interesting world." Susan G. Hauser is a f r e elance writer based in Portland, Ore., whose lifestyle and business writing appears in a range of publications, from Workforce Management to O, the Oprah Magazine.
