CUSTOM RIGS TUNERS ROUNDUP Revving up E ngine performance shops across the country can take your engine's stock electronic control module, break into it via a computer or other device and "retune" its settings to change your engine's timing or fuel pressure to give it more horsepower and increased fuel economy. Here are a few of the popular options on the market: Wes Malmgren, owner of Malmgren Transport in Aurora, Utah, began using Bully Dog Power Pups in 2009 and says he's seen about 1.2 mpg improvements in fuel economy, along with increased horsepower. Performance Diesel Inc. has an ECM upgrade for Caterpillar, Cummins and Detroit engines that it says "unlocks horsepower and fuel economy." PDI says it can tweak the upgrades for each customer based on driving style, application and other performance upgrades, and that its Big Boss ECM increases horsepower, torque and fuel economy. PDI, pdidiesel.com, 800-511-1231 Bully Dog's Power Pup offers three different tunes – fuel economy, fuel economy with power and return to stock. Bully Dog says the fuel economy tune can increase fuel mileage by 6 to 12 percent, while fuel economy with power increases fuel economy by about the same and ups torque by about 15 percent. Bully Dog says the tune does not leave a footprint and does not interfere with diagnostic tools. Bully Dog, bullydog.com, 940-783-9914 54 | Overdrive | May 2013 Tuners.indd 54 5/1/13 10:08 AM
