When winemaker Herb Quady and his wife, Meloney, were considering labels for their small-lot, minimally handled Quady North wines, they knew what they didn't want. "We wanted to break out from that traditional label with a highly designed logo or graphic, and we also didn't want the Old Napa or French chateau with a bridge and a tree," Herb Quady explained. "On the flip side, we didn't want to be comical or crude. I'm OK with irreverent, but I didn't want to lower the perceived value of the wine with silliness." Meloney, a graphic artist with a master's degree in fine art, sought to create a design that would give people a sense of the wines and the people behind them. "This was 2006 and tattoos were on the rise, but not as mainstream as they are now, so it was a little edgy." The label for the winery's first wine, Steelhead Run Vineyard Viognier, depicts a sparrow with flower accents. "It says, fresh graceful, bright and floral at the same time. The significance of the sparrow in flight is new beginnings – a hope of new opportunities," Quady said. One of the most graphic Quady North labels adorns its cabernet franc. It shows a juicy red heart pierced by a corkscrew. "We had a tortured experience with cabernet franc.
