60 | Overdrive | August 2015 DIVERSIONS It's been quite a ride for Evel Knievel's 1974 Mack FS700L cabover, rescued three years ago from the weeds in a yard in Clear- water, Fla. This summer, as the renovated rig was about to make its debut, Mack Trucks announced it is partnering with the historic Harley-Davidson dealer- ship in Topeka, Kan., and the truck's owner, Lathan McKay, of Evel Knievel Enterprises. The partnership will perpetuate the motorcycle stunt man's legacy through a traveling and permanent exhibit featuring Knievel memorabilia. Restortation started in 2012 in Lincolnton, N.C., at the shop of small fl eet owner and Brad's Classic Trucks proprietor Brad Wike. The story was told in the "Finding Evel" episode of "American Trucker" by host Robb Mariani, who since has kept up with the truck's recovery. The truck debuted at the Evel Knievel Days festival in Butte, Mont., July 23-25. From there, it was to travel to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Aug. 3-9, in South Dakota. "It's the vehicle that [Knievel] used to bring his show on the road" to the American people from his Butte base, cementing his stature as the iconic American daredevil, Mariani says.
