Master your moves Even though there are many similarities between using PowerPoint or Keynote on a computer and a tablet, there are a few differences worth noting. You want to familiarize yourself with these before you get in front of people. The last thing you want to do is struggle with the basic mechanics. Tip: If you're using PowerPoint on your tablet or Keynote on your iPad, master the following moves for easy navigation: • Swipe right to left to go forward. Swipe left to right to go backward. You can also use the arrow buttons in the lower left corner of your screen. • To end the presentation, swipe down in the middle of the slide. Then tap End Show. • To jump to a different slide, tap the left side of the screen to show the slide navigator, and then tap the slide you want to go to. • To hide the slide navigator, tap anywhere on the slide. • Avoid the left edge of the screen as you swipe to avoid see- ing the slide navigator on your iPad. Whiteboarding with your tablet With the right app, your tablet can turn into a portable whiteboard—which you can either use straight from the tablet or project onto a screen. This is great for brainstorming with your prospect and capturing ideas and questions. The white- boarding feature gives you a quick and easy way to make your presentation super interactive. Tip: A couple of good whiteboarding apps to try out are Whiteboard: Collaborative (free) or Splashtop Whiteboard ($35). Less is more With a small screen, you must be selective about deciding what to show. Too many small images can appear cluttered and make it hard to decipher your main point. Animations and transitions can be overly distracting and creative fonts can be difficult to read. Keep graphics and fonts simple and follow the rule of one idea per slide or screen and stick with it. Tip: Always err on the side of less is more. Used properly, a tablet can be a great way to support your message, showcase your work, and engage your audience. Tip: Just be sure to follow these best practices. WWJ Julie Hansen is a professional sales trainer, speaker, and author.
