26 COMMERCIAL CARRIER JOURNAL | AUGUST 2016 NACFE releases Confidence Report on low-viscosity oil T he North American Council for Freight Efficiency and Carbon War Room released their latest Confidence Report, one intended to provide the industry a foundational understanding of low-viscosity oil and how it contrib- utes to efficiency. The report is intended to help fl eets ra- tionalize their investment in low-viscosity engine oil by providing an unbiased over- view of the oil's benefi ts and challenges. NACFE said that since 2003, fl eets have been ramping up their investments in lower-viscosity lubricants, with adoption rates for engine oils reaching 40 percent among the largest and most effi cien- cy-conscious fl eets. However, adoption rates are much lower in the industry as a whole at 20 percent. NACFE study results show that Class 8 over-the-road fl eets can expect fuel savings in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 per- cent when switching from 15W-40 to 5W/10W-30 engine oil, whether they choose the currently available CJ-4 class or the new CK-4 class available in December. The savings from switching to the fuel-effi cient FA-4 variant, available after December, is expected to be 0.4 to 0.7 percent when compared to CJ-4/CK-4 5W/10W-30 oils, according to NACFE. The Confi dence Report looks at other assumed benefi ts of low-viscosity oil, such as being able to extend drain inter- vals, and also uncovers potential challeng- es of cost and compatibility. The study team spoke with fl eets, en- gine builders and lubricants and additives manufacturers, and also included reports from two case studies. The report also includes a Decision Guide and Payback Calculator to assist fl eets in determining if low-viscosity oils are right for them.
