www.landscapeirrigation.com Landscape and Irrigation October 2016 35 The pools and patio at Gateway Canyons resort area after installation. The resort was able to reduce patio temperatures to mitigate risk and increase comfort. The system also allowed for the resort to keep its desired design and incorporate a multi-level patio, with rock features that complement the incredible scenery. During the winter, the pool is heated by the system to 50 degrees in order to prevent freezing and eliminate the need for winterization. When hardscape design meets solar technology Pool engineers at Cloward H2O suggested to the owners of Gateway Canyons Resort in Gateway, Colo., that they consider using the ThermaPANEL system, due to its ability to invisibly solar heat the resort's two pools and spa, while cooling the patio. Resort owners had originally planned to put thermal solar collectors on top of the resort's southwestern-style log carports in the parking area. Using the ThermaPANEL system eliminated the need to design some type of screening to hide the solar collectors, and provided the value-added benefit of cooling the patio surface, as well as 24-hour heating of the pools due to the retained energy in the thermal mass of the pavers. Gateway Canyons Resort, Gateway Colo. The panel system is capable of integrating with any paver, stone, brick or concrete surface, allowing for a large range of surface options. It was conservatively projected that the system would provide 60 percent of the yearly energy requirements. After four years in operation, the system provided 100 percent each year. Not only does the system allow for a beautiful patio design, but it is dropping the patio temperatures from between 140 and 185 degrees Fahrenheit to a much more comfortable 120 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Pool temperatures are kept at a constant target temperature, letting patrons swim all day as well. PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THERMA-HEXX CORPORATION (WWW.THERMA-HEXX.COM). PROJECT DESIGNED BY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT GREG WHITE OF DTJ DESIGN INC. ThermaPANEL units are laid out in pre-assembled and connected rows for easy installation. Every panel is labeled so that there are no mistakes in laying out the system. Panels are factory connected with fusion welding, eliminating the chance for leaks at any connection. Rows are connected on site with a handheld socket fusion welder that also eliminates the chances for any leaks. The system is tested on site to ensure no damage has been done during installation or transport, and the patio installation process is continued immediately after testing. Panels provide a very sturdy sub-base, allowing for pavers to remain within ICPI guidelines. PROJECT PROFILE
